JTAG Boundary Scan 400 IO Module
Product Overview
With the Boundary Scan 400 IO (BSIO-400) module the nets
between the connector on the unit under test (UUT) and the
boundary scan devices on the UUT can be fully tested and verified.
These nets often are difficult to test because boundary scan
access often is not provided at the UUT's connector.

The BSIO-400 provides 400 boundary-scan test channels that
can increase the test coverage on the UUT. These test channels
are bi-directional and individually controllable, enabling
full boundary-scan test coverage of the nets between the UUT's
connector and the on-board boundary scan devices. Multiple
BSIO-400 modules can be connected together to increase the
number of test channels indefinitely.
Using the Boundary Scan 400 IO Module
The BSIO-400 is a small, low-cost module intended to be
designed into a UUT's test fixture. All of the BSIO-400's
test channels and power signals are available through an edge
connector, enabling easy installation and removal. The test
access port (TAP) signals are available on 14-pin headers
that are compatible with the ScanWorks PCI-100 Boundary-Scan
Controller.
The test channels on the BSIO-400 are driven by the IO pins
of standard, off-the-shelf programmable logic devices (PLDs)
so that each channel can be independently controlled. Each
IO pin has a control cell for independently setting an input,
output, or high impedance state. To ensure safe conditions
are always maintained or to include built-in test features,
the BSIO-400's PLDs can be programmed through ScanWorks. The
Boundary Scan 400 IO module comes with a Xilinx XC95144XL-TQ100
PLD which provides a 3.3V (5V compatible) interface to the
UUT and requires 3.3V power from the test fixture or external
power supply. The BSIO-400's PLDs are installed in sockets,
enabling other pin-compatible devices to be installed for
other voltages, such as 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V or 5.0V. All PLDs
in a particular configuration of the BSIO-400 must support
the same voltage.
Test Generation
BSIO-400 tests are created with ScanWorks' standard automatic
test generation tools. The software that's included with the
Boundary Scan 400 IO module features the boundary-scan path
description and the netlist files that are needed to merge
the BSIO-400 with the UUT. The ScanWorks Netlist Merging option
is used to easily merge netlists. The ScanWorks design description
and net list merging tools provide an easy way to integrate
the BSIO-400 into a test fixture.
The ScanWorks project management structure makes it simple
to create a design that describes the UUT without the BSIO-400
and then create another design that describes the combination
of the UUT and the BSIO-400. Once the UUT and BSIO-400 are
combined in a single design, scan path verification, interconnect
testing and any other test or programming action can be easily
generated through ScanWorks. Net names are clearly identified
to distinguish between the nets that are part of the UUT and
those on the test fixture.
The Boundary Scan 400 IO Module
The Boundary Scan 400 IO module includes:
- Hardware module
- Design description files, including PLD BSDL files
- Netlist file
- Documentation to describe connector pin-out and electrical
specifications
The cables from the BSIO-400 to the UUT are not provided
because each UUT interface is unique.
