For the financial types, the bottom line is how quickly an investment in a new test tool will pay for itself in cost savings. That is, the shorter the return on investment (ROI) the better. The answer for ScanWorks is emphatic. Lucent saved more than a $1 million when it started running ScanWorks JTAG tests on its 3070 ICT tester systems. By deploying ScanWorks and boundary scan, Navini increased its test coverage to over 90 percent and estimated that it recouped the cost of a ScanWorks manufacturing station from as few as first ten to 20 circuit boards tested.
And Reptron, a contract manufacturer, did a quantitative case study over 78 circuit boards, 20 of which required rework. Half had boundary scan and the others did not. The cost to test and diagnose the boards with boundary scan was $30,700 less, ensuring an almost immediate ROI on Reptron’s ScanWorks investment.
